The eco way of one pill

22 October 2021

For more than 10 years, the pharmaceutical company "Darnitsa" has had a system of responsible waste disposal in production. During the production of ready-made medicines, all waste is sorted and transferred for further processing or disposal in accordance with current legislation and concluded agreements. Due to the waste sorting program, 72.65% of waste was transferred for recycling in the third quarter of 2021.

In the third quarter of 2021, the production of solid dosage forms (tablets, capsules, granules) accounted for 76.7% of the total production volume of the pharmaceutical company "Darnitsa", 96 million packages were produced.

At each stage of the production of such drugs, quality control is carried out and relevant waste is formed.

At the stage of getting raw materials in production, there are two types of waste: primary and secondary packaging of raw materials. Primary packaging is something that has been in direct contact with raw materials, and is disposed of as hazardous waste by partner companies licensed for such types of work. Secondary packaging (cardboard and packaging film) is transferred to partner companies for further processing, for example, for wrapping paper for gifts/packages or ordinary student notebooks.

At the following stages of tablet production, such as: loading of raw materials, mixing of components, tableting, waste cannot be recycled or reused. This is a class of pharmaceutical waste, including: dust, raw material residues and tablets that have not passed quality control. Such waste makes up a third of the total volume and is transferred for disposal/destruction to specialized companies that have the appropriate license. Hazardous waste is transferred to thermal disposal by high-temperature combustion with catalytic oxidation of the initial gases.

At the stage of pre-packing / packaging, waste suitable for recycling appears. These are the remnants of film, foil and paper packaging materials (waste paper). When processing plastic waste, granules are produced at special processing factories. The granules are further used for the production of various plastic products, in particular clothes hangers, window frames, pipes, plastic furniture, etc.

"Eco-responsibility is the basis of modern production. That is why the development strategy of Darnitsa is in harmony with the achievement of environmental goals – protection of atmospheric air from pollution and reduction of harmful emissions, reduction of water consumption in the production cycle, safe waste management and maximum transfer for recycling, complete replacement of lighting elements with energy-saving ones and the introduction of a "Green Office" policy, - notes Andrii Obrizan, CEO of the pharmaceutical company "Darnitsa".
