Ukrainian Producers of Medicines Restore Pre-War Capacities — Results of the First Half of 2023

20 July 2023

In the first half of 2023, sales of medicines in Ukraine reached 420.5 million packages and almost UAH 62.5 billion. The rate of decrease in sales has slowed down significantly. If the volume sales in the first quarter of this year decreased by a quarter compared to the first quarter of 2022, according to the results of 6 months, it decreased only by 6.4% compared to the indicators of 6 months of 2022. Thus, domestic producers are restoring their pre-war capacities. According to the results of the first half of 2023, 63% of medicines sold in Ukraine are of Ukrainian origin.

This is evidenced by the analysis of the indicators of the two quarters of 2023, conducted by Proxima Research Company.

In particular, for 6 months of this year, pharmacies in Ukraine sold 66.3 million packages of medicines manufactured by Pharmaceutical Company ‘Darnytsia’, one of the permanent leaders in the production of medicines in Ukraine. Thus, the company’s market share in volume terms was more than 15.76%, and in monetary terms, it reached 5.29%.

According to analysts, during the 6 months of 2023, the pharmaceutical market grew by 23% in monetary terms, adding UAH 11.7 billion compared to the same period in 2022.

Despite the ongoing war, drug manufacturers continue to produce new brands and expand the geography of sales markets.

For example, in the first half of 2023, Darnytsia released 5 new brands (8 SKUs), including 3 brands (6 SKUs) of its own design and 2 brands (2 SKUs) under licence.

In addition, Darnytsia passed the GMP inspection by the regulatory authority of Kazakhstan and confirmed its compliance with the requirements of good manufacturing practice before the regulatory authority of Australia (TGA), having successfully passed the GMP Clearance procedure. Darnytsia also obtained an injection drug registration in Singapore and began shipping its drugs to Australia and Ghana.

The Ukrainian pharmaceutical industry keeps actively participating in charitable initiatives. Thus, since the beginning of the year, Pharmaceutical Company ‘Darnytsia’ has transferred 378 thousand packages of medicines in the amount of UAH 28.4 million. A number of medical institutions and military units throughout Ukraine received the drugs, as well as charitable foundations that provide assistance to citizens and organizations, in particular, in the de-occupied territories—a total of almost 90 organizations. At the same time, 2.6 million packages worth UAH 233 million have been transferred since the beginning of the war.
